Can Saturn 821 million miles away, affect the way a Reliance Communications stock moves on the Bombay Sensitive Index on planet Earth?

Believe in it and you may see your hard-earned savings disappear, like Meena Biswas did. This 60-year-old housewife in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, with little money or market experience, listened to a television astrologer connect Saturn with telecom and called her broker to buy some very expensive stocks, just when the Sensex was touching 21,000 in January 2008. The markets crashed and today Biswas is embarrassed to admit that she had been star-struck.

What guides common retail investors in India? Is it their gut instinct, technical analysts or the astrologer? Strange as it may sound, a new breed of self-styled “financial astrologers” have garnered prime television slots, set up sophisticated websites and call centres and managed to factor themselves into the stock market decisions people make.

It’s a gamble people are willing to take. For those used to dealing with the vagaries of the market, there’s little difference between astrologers and analysts. Sandeep Bagrodia, a 44-year-old investor, who owns chemical trading companies, puts the two in the same category.

Bagrodia has been playing the markets since 1990 and burnt his fingers listening to tips from TV analysts in the dotcom boom and bust cycle of the 1990s. “It is a game of luck. If you are to make money, you will. Astrological advice is as good or as bad as technical analysts. Both are professionals and have to earn their living.”

The believers

Others are not so sceptical. Take Partha Bhattacharya, a 31-year-old insurance agent, also from Kolkata. Bhattacharya believes 11 is his “power number.” He makes his stock market investments resolutely on the 11th of every month and buys or sells shares in multiples of 11—all on the advice of his suburban astrologer, Sukumar Bhattacharya. This small-time investor is convinced that 11 will bring him riches.

Natives of Kolkata are not known for their financial acumen, but travel to Gujarat, home to India’s richest industrialists and stock market players, and here too the zodiac shines bright.

Ashwin Thakker, a practising chartered accountant in Ahmedabad, is a bold and savvy investor with 30 years of market experience. In March 2008, an astrologer-friend advised him to sell his entire portfolio when the Sensex was hovering around 18,000 and Thakker did so.

In the next few months, the Sensex free-fell to 8,000 and Thakker cornered a neat profit of 200 per cent and shifted to government securities before venturing in again in 2009. The 58-year-old is no gullible player; his instincts are firmly fixed on fundamentals and global trends; yet when it comes to crucial stock market decisions, he checks with his astrologer.

Startlingly, even hard-core banking men are not immune from the lure of astrology. Vinod Sharma, head of business — private brokering and wealth management at HDFC Securities, says he is a believer.

“More and more investors are trying to seek astrological help in making their investment decisions. While I use fundamentals and technical data to advise clients, there is no harm in keeping astrological advice in the back ground, while investing, But it should act as a second point of reference and not the first. Astrological forecasts act more as reminder to carry the umbrella while going out rather than deciding not to venture out for the day.”

The deep-rooted faith Indians have in astrologers has been cleverly harnessed by many men of business. India’s best-known astrologer Bejan Daruwalla, now in his 80s, corporatised what used to be a household, personalised service.

The zodiac men

In 2003, Daruwalla saw the potential of the web and signed on one Hemang Arun Pandeet, a techno-entrepreneur with an electronics degree. Daruwalla lent his formidable brand image and his band of astrologers and Pandeet turned it into GaneshaSpeaks.com, a successful dotcom business, tailor-made for clients seeking divine intervention.

Soon, major internet companies like Rediff, Sify, Indiatimes, Shaadi.com tied up with GaneshaSpeaks.com. In June 2003, a call centre was launched in Ahmedabad. Astrologers were trained to deliver forecasts within 30 seconds of receiving a call. It later became round-the-clock business, with call centres expanding to Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, according to S. Balasubramanian, head of Corporate Communications, GaneshaSpeaks. The company’s call centres now employ more than 200 astrologers and handle more than 25,000 telephone consultations daily, apart from the 900-1,000 customers everyday on the web interface.

Another tech savvy stock market guru is Jaipur-based Lt Col Ajay, CEO of astromoneyguru.com and futurebazaronline.com. A regular on business channels and stock exchange seminars and webinars, Jain makes daily predictions through his websites and TV shows. His fees are high. Depending on the requirements of an individual or brokerage house, it starts from Rs9,000 (Dh703) up to more than Rs100,000.

Ajay runs his operations from Jaipur in western India with the help of his wife and five employees, providing daily stock predictions through SMS, weekly newsletters, personal consultancy and online financial astrology courses.

“Our website is different from other normal astrology sites because we predict movements of world stock, commodities and forex markets on an intraday basis before the market opens and predict daily intraday movement well in advance,” he says. Ajay even trains young people in “financial astrology” and gives them “on-job training”.

With demand for stellar help on the rise, it’s little wonder that this is actually a career option for some in India. A representative of the All India Federation of Astrologers, which provides courses in astrology, says numerology and financial prediction courses have become more popular over the years.

Financial crisis and its impact

The 2008 world financial crisis was a trend-changing year in more ways than one. This was a time when high profile, venerated market analysts had their reputations in shreds. In these uncertain times, helpless Indian investors saw little difference between them and homegrown astrologers.

Ketan Shanghavi, 47, has been a passionate investor for the past 20 years. While astrologers are a no-no for him, Shanghavi says he depends a lot on his own instinct. When the world financial crisis barely began to unfold, Shanghavi sold his entire stock and booked profits. But when he saw that Indian markets were slow in reacting, he panicked, bought more stocks only to lose money when the markets tanked later. He regrets not heeding his instinct.

Sweta Killa, a technical analyst from Kolkata, feels small investors are always at a loss — whether they follow astrologers or newspapers. Killa, who has inside knowledge of how stock markets work, says price movement generally depends on how the big market operators choose to move. If they think a certain popular astrological website is influencing retail behaviour, they will factor it in.

Stock market veterans, however, are extremely wary of the rise of financial astrology and are more scathing. Kamal Parekh, ex-president of the Calcutta Stock Exchange and now chairman, Stewart Securities Ltd, a leading Kolkata based brokerage firm, says, “There is no correlation between astrologers and movement in the stock markets. There are some traders and speculators who use the help of these astrologers and spread all kinds of information. This simply misleads people on price movements.”

Parekh says all equity investment is risk capital and people should only invest only surplus money into these segments. “Investors must also understand that economic, political, industrial factors and company performance affects stock market indices and the company market price. An investor should not bank on hearsay but try to examine these factors along with details of the balance sheet, profit and loss account, track record of the company.”

So what makes Indian investors opt for a double jeopardy—taking specious advice for something inherently unpredictable? Hansal Bhachech, a well-known consultant psychiatrist in Ahmedabad, says: “People are always curious to know the future, more so when it is unpredictable. Common investors have little instinct or knowledge about the market. They see this as a means for making easy money. In such circumstances, they clutch on to whatever tips and predictions they come across.”

Bhachech’s home state Gujarat, where investors have maximum risk appetite, also sees a lot of financial stress. The psychiatrist says he has recorded a significant increase in the number of clients coming with financial problems. “Every sharp downward movement makes people anxious and depressed and sharp upward movement leads to elated and over confident behaviour. In many people, such mood and behaviour swings are severe enough for them to need a psychiatrist,” he says.

Interestingly, astrology is not a legal profession in India. Prabir Ghosh, general secretary of the Science & Rationalists Association of India, states that according to a memo issued in November 2005, the Professional Tax Department of West Bengal withdrew all professional taxes imposed on astrologers, thereby making the profession illegal. This ruling is applicable throughout the country, yet Ghosh says not many realise its importance.

From time to time, the Rationalists Association throws a challenge to the astrologers across the country. They offer Rs2.5 million (Dh195,550) to any astrologer who can prove his or her claim—be it an outlandish health remedy or Parliamentary election results.

This time, the rationalists want to put up their kitty for anyone who can correctly predict the stock market for any one week! This network of activists have been battling for more than two decades to bust myths, superstitions and expose their pet hates—the astrologers.

NAKALI, India (AFP) – A dried-up and polluted lake in eastern India has become a major pilgrimage site attracting thousands of people a day after claims that its mud cures cancer and other diseases.

At the lake in Nakali village, 70 kilometres (45 miles) south of Kolkata, families smear each other in the dark, gluey “miracle mud”, defying government attempts to prevent the site becoming a religious attraction.

Each Tuesday and Saturday — auspicious days for Bengalis — large crowds of devotees who have travelled from across the region gather before dawn to completely immerse themselves in the sludge at the bottom of the small lake.

“They arrive overnight in trucks, chartered buses and trains from different parts of the state,” Suman Mondal, a 28-year-old selling lemon water to the mainly Hindu pilgrims, told AFP.

“People are not only bathing and covering their body and hair with mud, they are drinking water and taking mud from the pond as well. It’s a miracle pond.”

Kanti Ganguly, the West Bengal state minister for the Sunderbans region, said the government wanted to end the increasingly popular pilgrimage.

“People started to throng to the pond for a bathe after a rumour did the rounds of local villages last year that a man was cured of liver cancer by taking dips,” he said.

“Authorities have imposed a ban on gathering in and around the pond as its waters are so polluted that drinking the water or taking a bathe could be unhealthy.”

Ganguly said policemen had been stationed around the lake but people poured in nonetheless. “We can’t hurt their faith,” he said.

The phenomenon has continued to grow even though the “cured” man has now died. He was a member of the family that owns the lake.

“It all started after my brother, Hiranmoy, had a dream about a snake goddess telling him that a dip in the pond could produce miracle cures of killer diseases,” Tarini Raj, 45, said.

“He was cured of cancer for a while, but later died.”

Raj pointed to rows of images of snake goddesses beside the pond, offered by those who believed they had been cured of their diseases.

“It’s a ritual to offer prayers to the snake goddess,” he said. “Those who come are mainly poor people suffering from chronic ailments. The number is nearly half a million but now on the wane because of the summer heat.”

Some say the family is motivated by the money it collects from food and drink stalls that serve pilgrims, but devotees like Biswajit Haldar, 56, are in no doubt about the pond’s curative powers.

“We are not bothered what the government says. My wife was suffering from throat cancer for over two years. She is now better after smearing her body with mud of the pond,” he said, sitting in the knee-deep mire.

Bathing in sacred water plays a central part in the Hindu religion, with many believing a dip in the holy Ganges river can cure diseases as well as wash away sin and break the cycle of life and rebirth.

Tens of millions of people bathed in the Ganges during the Kumbh Mela festival in northern India which finished last month after 104 days that were seen as especially auspicious.

But not all Indians subscribe to such beliefs. Prabir Ghosh, general secretary of the Kolkata-based Science and Rationalist Association of India, has been campaigning against the Nakali lake’s sudden rise to religious prominence.

“It’s just a superstition. Authorities should deal with such a thing. This stinking pond is only a health hazard,” he told AFP.

Ghosh said some rationalist campaigners had been beaten up when they went to the pond to express their views.

“But we are not scared, we will continue our campaign against this false belief,” he vowed.

Ian Pindar
The Guardian, Saturday 22 May 2010

Piers Moore Ede, an atheist suffering from a vague spiritual emptiness, rejects the materialism of the west and travels to the Himalayas, India and Turkey in search of something “numinous”, holy and transcendent. The journey eastwards in search of enlightenment is a well-worn trope that this book does little to revitalise.

The mystics Moore Ede encounters respond wearily to his requests for magical knowledge. “Many foreigners wanting this, actually,” one sadhu observes. “Always asking jadoo, asking miracles.” Moore Ede spends all his time asking jadoo. He watches with interest as a woman, claiming to be an incarnation of Kali, wails and gnashes her teeth, and he is revolted by another female oracle who appears to suck a bucketful of black liquid from the stomach of an unruly boy. There is an uncomfortable, freak-show element to these encounters.

“Many young people I spoke to seemed to resent the continual string of western seekers following the well-trodden path to the east,” Moore Ede notes. “And who could blame them? They were lifting themselves up by the bootstraps, finding economic freedom their parents could never have dreamed of. That all these westerners should come here asserting the need to leave the material world behind was both patronising and faintly hilarious.” Had Moore Ede developed this point further he might have given his book an edge, but he misses the real story for a rehash – almost a parody – of the hippy dream.

All Kinds of Magic is most reminiscent of the bestselling books by the controversial anthropologist Carlos Castaneda, whom Moore Ede discusses in a chapter on shamanism. The style of this passage, for instance, when Moore Ede’s head is touched by a blind Sufi master, is pure Castaneda: “In that instant a warm heat began to pulse across my crown. For a second my mind began to ripple with surprise, and then it quietened. I felt a great slackening of pressure, and a sense of a wise awareness passing through me. It was like an electric current travelling through circuits, or a warm liquid flushing out a blocked-up drain.”

Moore Ede comes across as somewhat credulous at times and his analysis is shallow, but the writing is energetic and compelling. His description of taking ayahuasca or yagé is a worthy climax to his quest. It begins with “snort[ing] what felt like a jet of battery acid into each nostril” and ends with him “travelling to cyber realms, through fantastical worlds made up of DNA strands and stardust”. As William Burroughs observed of this drug: “Yagé is not like anything else. It produces the most complete derangement of the senses.”

In these postmodern times there is something rather quaint about setting out in search of “truth” or “meaning”, but with the aid of a powerful hallucinogen Moore Ede gets his answer. At the same time, one senses that the “raw spirituality” he seeks in the east has long gone. A sadhu tells him in broken English of “one temple in Ahmadabad where Hanuman statue is granting anyone who asks visas for America”, while an Indian phone company offers free talk time for sadhus.

Distracted by supernatural sideshows, Moore Ede misses the chance to really engage with the political reality of the places he visits.

In India, for instance, the supernatural is political. Moore Ede doesn’t have much time for the Indian rationalist Prabir Ghosh, but as Ghosh observes: “By exposing these god men we are shaking the very foundations of power. Many of them have political affiliations and entreat their devotees to vote one way or the other.”

Moore Ede is enjoying his spiritual tourist trail too much to think about politics, but I sympathised with the Tibetan waiter in Darjeeling who tells him: “I am not having much time for miracles. For me, a real miracle would be if the Chinese announced immediate withdrawal from our country.”

Pt Sitaramji was lodged in room # 104 of Hotel Devarshi at Bankura town. He was there since May 13, 2010.

He could make accurate predictions about the future of any person with a mere glance and studying through the palm lines. Further, he can relive anyone from serious hassles ranging from infertility to unsuccessful relations…or just anything possible under the sky. Fees? Well…that was INR 51 per client for every three predictions.

Yes, that’s what a pamphlet published by Pt Sitaramji said.

Astrologer Sitaramji

As usual, numerous questions/ queries began to flow in from thousands of people in the local office of the Science and Rationalists’ Association of India, about the logical sanctity of such claims made by Sitaramji.

The association was too eager to bring out the truth. So, a visit to Sitaramji was made on May 16, 2010, by the members of the association, lead by Biplab Das.

Tarun Rakshit, a member of the association came out with an issue where his wife is unable to bear a child even years after his marriage. Sitaramji’s prescription was instant…” Pay INR 5000 and take a ‘Jantram’ (a talisman)…surely, you will be blessed with a baby by this year”. Tarun is however a bachelor, which the “foreteller” failed to judge.

Chandra Karmakar of Bhairabsthan carried a snap of a girl, whom he said was desperately in love and wanted to marry. Again, Sitaramji promised to solve the issue through “ photograph hypnotism” and charged INR 2800 for the same. The truth is, Chandra doesn’t even know who that girl is. Amazing, isn’t it?

Sitaramji also miserably failed to envisage anything even near to reality in the case of Sudhir Hansda of Harigram, but charged INR 3300 for the same.

Another illustration of his dismal show was about Tuhin Banerjee, a Primary School teacher of Susunia, whom Sitaramji predicted to be suffering from unemployment.

The most apprehending of all was the case of Prasanta Mondal of Bhairabsthan who is a patient of Epilepsy. Sitaramji asserted to heal his disease through “supernatural” means by chanting mantras, which is clearly a criminal offence as per ‘The Drugs & Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act 1954’.

On that very afternoon of May 16, 2010, Biplab Das, Shyam Das, Buddha Roy and other members of the association charged Sitaramji of hoodwinking and cheating people through his false and unscientific claims. Unable to face such grilling where he was bombarded with questions and challenges, Sitaramji broke down and began to give contradictory statements.

Shortly, members of the association lodged a complaint with the local Police Station (General Diary no 1372 dated May 16, 2010).

It was later learnt from the authorities of Hotel Devarshi that Pt Sitaramji has left the abode.

A beheaded blood splattered torso of a 25 years old male body was found outside of a temple of Kali goddess (Kali is a goddess of power in Hindu religion) at a village in Birbhum district, which is nearly 1 km away from Shantiniketan in West Bengal. It was raising suspicion of sacrifices. The district police authority said that they are investigating the matter. Though human sacrifice has long been banned in India.

According to the police report, the body of the man was first spotted by the temple priest around 5am when he went for prayers on Thursday April 15 morning. A senior police officer said the torso was a male body and it was found near the altar placed in front of the temple, where marigold flowers and incense sticks, bloodstains were found on the altar for animal sacrifices. The district police head Rabindranath Mukherjee said “investigations pointing towards a murder, it was made to look like human sacrifice. A tribal youth has been detained for interrogation”.

“It is unfortunate that still the practice is going on secretly after our long awareness campaign. The sacrifice of goats is part of the worship of Kali goddess, after the campaign it has been discontinued in many temples” said Prabir Ghosh of “Juktibadi Samity” a NGO who is working for a long time to raise awareness campaign against superstitions, primitive religious rituals and old myths in India. He added human sacrifice is illegal in India.

Incidentally–
After the intervention of the Rationalists Association of India, Birbhum branch –led by Prabir Ghosh, the killer was arrested . Kalo Majhi a tantrik sacrificed his ‘friend’ the 45 year old Paresh Bagdi. Massive postering campaign in the area by the Rationalists led to the arrest of the culprit. On April 22, Kalo Majhi confessed his guilt.
