Delhi Delusions: Politics & Play

This is the headline of an article by Ramchandra Guha in The Telegraph dated 18 June, 2011. For those who cannot read it in full, I give below some interesting lines:-- Regarding Delhi media’s obsession with Ramdev’s fast he writes – “By the standards of police brutality, what happened that night at the Ramlila Maidan was a dinner party…Over the past five years the police in Chhattisgarh have regularly burnt homes and crops and attacked villagers whose only crime is that they do not wholly endorse the state government’s promotion of the armed vigilantes known as salwa judum. Yet no paper published out of Delhi has ever run an example of such police brutality on its front page, no channel operating out of Delhi has ever made it a main headline… **** Without question the most corrupt state government is that of Karnataka, where mafia dons are ministers, having bought their power on the backs of millions of tones of iron ore illegally mined on forest land and illegally exported without paying taxes and by violating environmental and labour standards. The scale of their loot is expressed by the great civil rights lawyer K.G.Kannabiran before he died … compared to the mining dons of Bellary, Nadir Shah was a mere pickpocket... **** If Ramdev comes here and start a fast against political corruption, I will be at his side. … But Ramdev will not come here for three reasons. First, he speaks comfortably only in Hindi…Second, for all his protestations about being non-political, he is actually very close to the sangh parivar and doesn’t want to embarrass a government run by the BJP. Third, he knows that a fast in Bangalore will not attract …the same interest from the ‘national’ media as a fast in Delhi.” [From The Telegraph, 18.06.2011]
