By Sumitra Padmanabhan Yes, we could avoid another communal riot. Disregarding all historical and archeological truths we stooped to honor the ‘faith and sentiment of the majority’. Who did this? The answer is -- the honorable court. This farce will remain as a milestone in the history of India’s regression; at least that is what many sensible people think today. The Sunni Wakf Board cannot represent the whole Muslim community in India. The other two contestants were also two small Hindu groups. This petty squabble over the title of a piece of land was bloated out of proportion by excessive security arrangements and massive media coverage. People irrespective of their education, creed and religion were waiting with hope, fear and anxiety for the final verdict. This whole situation was unbecoming of a so called secular nation and it surely exposed its ‘secular’ façade. The opportunity to establish India as a strong, progressive and secular nation is probably lost for ever. Resorting to untruth to avoid communal riot will remain as a blatant evidence of how political stand can influence the course of law. The judges acted thus because the government wanted them to do so. Ram is an imaginary character of a great Indian epic; but we were all informed to our surprise that Ram was indeed born there in the disputed site in Ayodhya; there was this ten-headed demon called Ravan and the faithful Hanuman did put out the Sun by pressing it under his arm to carry out his feat in the dark. History may never forgive the verdict of these judges. This sort of judgment will pave the way for further disputes and forceful acquisitions in the name of ‘faith’. It will lead to further distortions of truth, of utter disregard for history and culture. Shall India ever be able to criticize other nations and communities for being communal or fanatical? Is India not joining the band of Afghans who could blast the ancient Buddha figures of Bamiyan to wipe off history? After this, if the court condones ‘honor-killings’ in the name of ‘public faith and practice’ – we need not be surprised. To lose faith in the judicial system marks the last stage of a nation’s downfall. And that is the net outcome of this verdict. To avoid a communal riot for the time-being, a long-term damage has been done. People with common sense and maturity can help repair this damage. Those with a little regard for history and scientific evidences should come forward with open verbal criticism and ridicule this crooked, foolish and farcical judgment. Babri Masjid established 1528, that is historical truth.Ram is an imaginary character of a great Indian epic. So,logically, we can’t support Ram jonmovumi punoroddhar commity. Mis, Padmanavan said”This whole situation was unbecoming of a so called secular nation and it surely exposed its ‘secular’ façade. The opportunity to establish India as a strong, progressive and secular nation is probably lost for ever”.I strongly support the comment.

in this case, the lwayers, the judges, the medias all were politically motivated. and a time comes when all political parties share their hands to bore the truth.

If JUDICIARY has to base it’s judgement on some irrational and illogical “popular” religious beliefs of a section of nation, then why do we need a judicial system? Why do we need to pay heavy taxes for maintenance of courts etc.? I would rather prefer the “religious” godmen to hear the cases instead of judges and give their judgement. I don’t want puppets to be called judges.

    Thanks for posting this article.
The verdict of Allahabad high court, filled me with cold horror, to say the least.

The verdict paves the way to vandalize anything, capture anything in the name of faith.

Tomorrow, Taj Mahal can be the in-laws house of Dasharath, who knows??? Someone can push in some relevant “lalla”…and there will be no dearth of people to worship it.

Also, I feel the attorneys need not have to worry on evidences or witnesses to evaluate the merit of a lawsuit. The Allahabad court has set up a precedence where “faith” or “belief” will preside over anything else.

thanks to Sumitra Padmanavan for nice article in this right situation.

I support her in this view that the character of ‘Rama’ is a imaginary character. it has no historical proof. no body can prove it. though the loknow bench decalare the judgement -it’s really Ridiculous. history and our future logic-minded nation naver forgive us.

The extraneous and malevolent comments and observations of the judges are to be expunged from the judgment statement. It was uncalled for and should be quashed.
Moreover, the myth of Ram is not majority Hindu belief, only of the fiercely so. The majority of Indians believe Ganga water can heal ailments. Will any doctor presribe ganga-jol as medicine? These judges have forgotten their basic duty and are not even loyal to their profession.

i am very pleased to hear ur views but my personal opinion is that the courts decision is the best what could think of as india is such a nation which has not got rid of old belives many supernatural thoughts so any other way it would be possible to satisfy the majority and the case would remain pending for more years.
the best option is constructing scholls, colleges, hospital or any other social welfare centre but it would not satisfy the majority.
we should understand the fact that RELGIONS ARE JUST THE WAY OF LIVING AND NOTHING ELS.
and it should be thought upon

yes mr. Sandip Chanda, you are right.
I think same like you that the religion is only a thing that the people can be made full. the weapon of election of the political parties.

If india want to grow developing and shining “Humanism” is the only way

this verdic is very shameful to all secular and rationalist persons. Ram is imaginary charecter how can he born in ayudhya? are the judges uneducated ? they have no idea about historical and scientific proof

  21. sagar 30 October 2010 at 12:52 AM #

if verdict would have been in favour of masjit than it is secular and rational. but if it is in favour of temple it is againest democracy.

    please be rational

  22. sagar 30 October 2010 at 12:56 AM #

regarding ram being imaginary character or a realty please leave it for time to decide.

according to law ram is a legal person. ne desputes about it

you still have doubt and want proofs for rams existence than please
first obtain historical proofs about your forefathers by reputed historians.

  23. ARUMBHU 14 December 2010 at 9:06 AM #

Well Said. The nation is a pseudo democracy.Fools elect foul people who don’t have scientific bend of mind. Primitive society guarded jealously by morons of the third kind.
There must be a movement to get a religious status for Atheism and then we can carry forward this fight against blind faiths to its logical end.
Bengalis and Tamilians are more liberal and question bad customs. Other state people must emulate them I feel. Can’t we have a regular Atheists Congress every now and then?

yes u are all right that ramayan is an epic and mahabharat too…bt bhagavad gita is nt….to believe in ram or sree krishna u need nt imagine him to have killd demons or having hanuman by its side….or krishna killing demons….it is actualy a reflection of the traditional society…as because vyas deb is there having a real xistence so the ram too bt nt compulsory tht he should look like the thing depictd in ramayan .the depiction is only based on the thing to ornament the real personality so that it becomes easier for the common man to grab the moral..and yes science had recently proved of stem cell cultre bt we see in the mahabharat stem cell cultre was there….thus it is foolishness to think that which science hadnt discoverd it is only explores and it is still on its way…
and talking about humanity our cultre was the only cultre which taught humanity to all kind ,the most ancient one…and if u are talking of history u should have forgot that before it was a masjid it was a temple of ram,its true by history and archaelogical survey report…and the existence of a civilization very modern in ancient days a kingdom is also supportd by archaelogical days…if it was not ram also(for the sake of an argument) that was the kingdom of a ruler who had such such qualities that people regard him as god….i dont see in wrong in that…and if u then also argue then i must say u go and destroy jerusalem because jesus was also born from a virgin mother which science do nt accept…the concept of jannat having 72 sex partners is also nt acceptd by science…so is it….do devi durga look like what we portray of it ?? signifies the mother of strength that is real….u all have nt read any basics of religion and came here to debate….one of my friend cited abt ganga…is it holy or not..yes it was holy and so also the river from glacietic origin…it had anti infective property due to its perenial source and due to the presence of many minerals eroded from the mountain bed….bt if u now ask me whether it is now holy or not the answer is no…because of pollution…think rationally over issues practiced dor centuries at that time too nalanda university was there…dnt ever forget???
