What makes Ramdev so important?

If ‘Baba’ Ramdev fasts – what’s the problem?   1] Fasting had always been the most non-violent mode of protest since the time of Gandhiji—Anna Hazare fasted and got tremendous public support, before that Mamata Banerjee fasted for 25 days and brought the ‘Singur issue’ to limelight – giving it the due national importance and setting up a precedence that showed throughout India how state cannot evict poor people from their birthplace in the name of ‘development’.   2] Why this commotion about Ramdev the yoga-guru who after all knows ‘khechari-mudra’ as he himself claims –that allows people to survive without food and water. All the hype and excitement around Ramdev was sickening! As if Anna’s life was less valuable!   3] Shame on the government that ignores the decade-long fasting of Irom Sharmila Chanu. She is being force-fed and kept under arrest for more than 10 years. Her body-weight has reduced to half its original. Imagine her tenacity and strength of mind. All that she demands is a repeal of AFSPA that is causing havoc throughout the North east, causing death, destruction and rape of her fellow citizens. The economy of Manipur has dwindled; normal social life is in doldrums.   Shame shame ! Nobody from the centre has ever visited Sharmila. Is it because she is a girl? A poor girl? A poor girl from backward area?  Fie on the central government machinery!   An exaggerated importance to this so called ‘guru’ who is supposedly in collusion with politicians is beyond any rationality. SHAME SHAME   If Sharmila and her issue is not getting due importance – we demand so and request all people with common sense and humanity to rise up in protest.   The black-money if brought back will vanish into this present system. Nobody should believe that it will directly help the poor. On the other hand it is laws like UAPA and AFSPA that are directly responsible for the pathetic condition of the poor. They gag the voice of protest from the deprived.   So Sharmila’s issue should get much more support from common public.

Thanks to SRAI for such a great artical. Govt now should act similarly to everyone. They should not do partiality to popular and powerfull figure. Indian constitution has given equal right to every citizen of india. I have due respect to Anna Hazarae’s movement but it is also true that What Anna Hazare or Ramdev deserve Irom Sharmila Chanu deserve much much more that that. She is suffering for more that 10 years !!!

  14. Lata Tauro 6 June 2011 at 1:18 PM #

I agree and would like to add that it was not necessary for Ramdev to start an agitation of his own as Anna Hazare had already done so. At the most he could have supported Anna Hazare. It is clear that he wants publicity for himself which is prompting this effort. Unfortunately we live in a non-rationalist society and people blindly follow individuals like Ramdev, ascribing godly powers to them and treating them, in fact like god. We need education more than anything else to change this mind set so that people are no longer swayed by babas and gurus and godmen.

the dhamaka news of today afternoon.-

If nothing else, the Delhi police raid on Baba Ramdev’s camp on Sunday has helped clear some confusion. The midnight swoop was unexpected, but we now know that the central government, which treated the yoga guru like an honoured state guest when he first arrived in Delhi, is his enemy.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh has described Ramdev as a “thug” and a “fraud”. In turn, Ramdev has accused the centre of trying to murder him, and described senior minister Kapil Sibal as “a liar and a cunning man”. His supporters, or at least men claiming to be his supporters, have attacked Digvijay Singh’s house in Bhopal. The Congress has promptly dubbed Ramdev a secret agent of the BJP. As you can see, a full-fledged war is on.

We also know that the BJP is going all out to support Ramdev. It has organised protests all over India to protest against his eviction, and is complaining that the centre is unleashing Emergency-like terror against its political opponents. Senior leaders like L K Advani are seeking to meet President Pratibha Patil. At least 30 of Ramdev’s followers were injured when the police started caning them in the middle of the night, and the outrage against the government is nervous all of this could snowball into something too huge for it to control.

It’s now Team Baba (with full support from the BJP) vs the UPA. Anna Hazare and his team have expressed solidarity with Ramdev, and called off their meeting with the government on Monday over the drafting of the Lokpal Bill. But are they fully with Ramdev? Yes and no. They support his campaign against corruption but are queasy about the Sangh parivar jumping on to his bandwagon.

Already a cult figure thanks to his TV shows promoting yoga, Ramdev has been able to inspire many thousands to travel to Delhi to participate in his rally. He enjoys all-India appeal, and as a commentator put it, the government has reason to worry because his supporters are from the small towns, and they vote. The government knows how to handle criticism from urban intellectuals, who advance sophisticated arguments but do little by way of political action. With someone like Ramdev, the UPA government knows it has to tread carefully. It may already have lost some credibility by talking one moment to the guru and tear-gassing his supporters the next.

Many look at Ramdev with suspicion because (a) he is wealthy, even owning a Scottish island, but claims to represent the poor masses; (b) he runs a profitable business selling Ayurvedic medicines, and could have a sales agenda; (c) he enjoys support from communal and corrupt groups, which could quietly hijack his cause for votes; (d) his campaign makes unreasonable demands that cannot be met overnight; and (d) his rabble-rousing could create law and order problems.

So is Ramdev a dhongi (fake) baba, as Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson Tushar tweeted on Sunday? Or does he represent a popular cause that was just waiting for a leader?

In all the drama, we have forgotten what he’s asking for: that black money stashed away in foreign banks be brought back to India, that professional education be imparted in Indian languages, and that high-denomination currency notes be withdrawn so that illegal transactions are curbed. His demands will find resonance among the less affluentand those sidelined by India’s globalised economy, even if he is ridiculed elsewhere.

if ramdev is keeping any double standard or hiding some motive behind this fast, then we should be careful about that.I wonder sometimes why people like godmans & corrupt people got influential character and position in d society where there are lots of person who could lead .I’m with ramdev as far as d cause of his fast is with the interest of d common people. We need transparency and justice. I think politics should be made professional as dere is no sign of sacrifice and goodwill among d politicians. Just be accountable get paid for your service.
