The Hon’ble Governor, Government of West Bengal, India

The Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal, India

You are well aware that sacrificing animals for spiritual reasons as a part of religious ritual is legally forbidden in India.

It is however quite painful & immensely concerning to note in this regard that in spite of existence of a stringent regulation against practice, countless numbers of different animals like buffaloes, goats, camels, ducks, hens etc are being slaughtered everyday in a range of religious rites across the nation.

It is a subject of shame & disgrace that West Bengal too is no exception to such social wickedness. As for instance, in some of the Primary schools of Bankura district, there is practice of sacrificing animals in front of school children on the occasion of “Manasa Puja” (worship of Manasa, a goddess of Hindus). This practice of utter brutality is performed every year, which without doubt generates an adverse effect into the young minds of school children.

The organizers and arrangers of such ritual are again going to recur it during the third week of August this year. The local administration is astoundingly silent on the issue.

For the last few years we, the Science and Rationalists’ Association of India had been combating against such brutal activities in school premises.

We are certain that you will duly comprehend the severity of the circumstances and will send your kind instruction (s) to the concerned officials to enquire & set off necessary measures towards abolition of such evil practices from places where education is imparted.

An affirmative response from your end will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you,

Biplab Das, Secretary, Science and Rationalists’ Association of India

Float your mind to Lankeswari Temple near Digha at the district of Midnapore and close your eyes to visualize the scene that was inacted in front of me about sixty years before when I was just 11. Please take trouble to tolerate the intolerable scene to understand how filthy, how heart breaking, how unjust is the product and byproduct of religion and why all civilized people should crusade against religious crimes.
Beating dhaks (drum) and kansi and shouting slogans praising kindness of the cruel goddess, a religious procession of pious people headed by the village head heading towards the temple to slaughter a mute animal. The goddess seems smiling at the pleasant dream of enjoying the pleasure of drinking blood of her own child – a young baby of a goat. The brute mass brought the animal to a pond and dipped it in its water. They then decorated its forehead with red vermillion and its neck with a garland of marigold. When the animal’s last launch with fruits and grass was over they forced its neck through the harhikath (gillotinelike holy tool to behead a man or animal) and locked it by a stick through its holes. Two accomplices of the crime hold its hind legs tightly. The defenseless animal shouted in fear of death. Nobody cared to understand its final prayer. Its ba ba was drowned in the sound of louder drums. The heart beat of the exited audience was, as it were stopped for a while with awe and beastly ecstasy. Some closed their eyes. The drunk butcher with his glazing kanrha (sword) in hand started running from a distance to gain strength and rushed towards the animal and beheaded it in one strike. The people turned beasts and rejoiced wildly viewing the beauty of cruelty. Within a moment of the killing, one of the devotees hold the neck of the headless body tightly so that the blood did not flow away and thereafter took the trembling body away with a view to pour the hot blood into the ‘tongue’(explained later)of the goddess. The children started crying at their first taste of the pious sight of killing and prepare themselves to absorb the shock of the human killing or to kill humans in future. AND LIKE JESSUS THE ANIMAL DIED TO SAVE THE MANKIND.
My 11 years mind was also shocked – utterly shocked. I returned home carrying my overloaded heart to find my mother preparing spices to enhance the test of the meat of the unfortunate animal that left after divine consumption.
With extreme grief I could not eat at all that day and sobbed secretly. My grandmother consoled me with the assurance that the goat got a place in the Heaven which I could not believe. In the religious stories I have never heard of a goat grazing in the Heaven. I could not sleep too. In the midnight I proceeded towards the soundless jungle all alone. With extreme hate and anger I stoned the goddess through the window of the temple and broke the harhikath into pieces.
Next day I invited my pals, the trusted partners of my childhood sins to the temple site and reenacted the sins I committed last night. Took them to the Raktakhaiburi, as the promoters of the goddess named. It is a piece of stone placed under a huge neem tree suggesting the ‘tongue’ of goddess by which the kind mother pleases to suck the blood of her dear victims. As I might be accused of nudity, I will not describe what I did on the head of the divine tongue. Only I may tell you that one of my friends confidently declared that my offending organ will fall down soon like a ripe mango. Perhaps to avoid that unfortunate hazard, I threw away the stone in the pond nearby to confine it under the sand and water. That day I was turned atheist forever and being unaffected by heavenly curse still living at sixty nine in fairly good health enduring long flights to different countries around the world where my children and grandchildren live. The powerless piece of stone failed to take revenge and the religion was defeated miserably.
Now let us return to 2011. I am sorry to predict that neither the Chief Minister, nor the Governor not even the Court will be powerful enough to stop religious crime like public performance of animal slaughter and that too in remort rural Bankura.None of them has any courage, ability or intention to discharge their constitutional duties. Being a religious and obviously a superstitious lady herself, the present Chief Minister cannot even venture to enrage her bloodthirsty next-door neighbor at Kalighat temple by depriving the ‘mother’s’ luxury of blood drinking and thus make her voters hostile as well. She, even while a Railway Minister dared not to sweep out the illegal Kali outlet at Kalighat Metro Station. Most of the people, even educated ones and most of the men in the Administration are heaven greedy and hell terrorized. In fact without flashing out the fearsome gods from the corrupt minds of religious people, none can stop such uncivilized religious entertainment. Then should the civilized world remain idle onlooker of the nasty show that was taught by our naked primitive ancestors? Hence all enlightened people should join their hands with SRAI which is engaged with the social duty of sweeping away all sorts of superstitions from religiously maldoctrinated society. We should crush the venomous religious sentiments to protect the civilized sentiments, to protect the animals and to save the minds of our kids from religious pollution. If found necessary we should even break the lawless law of blasphemy.
Apart from filing the joint petition as proposed by the SRAI, which I doubt whether it will receive due justice, I request to demand, if the Administration feel shy to establish law, or if they are terrorized by the bloody eyes of the cruel gods or if they are afraid of losing the superstitious voters, they should repeal altogether all the laws relating to animal sacrifice and thus unburden themselves of their constitutional responsibility and save their face from humiliation.
Also I request the young people and children to boycott the festival of killing and hold their greed for consuming the meat of the animals those are killed by the religious criminals what I did about six decades before. I invite those thousands of my children and grandchildren to defy their parents, grandparents, gurus, purhits and all others who inject poison of religion that teaches any kind of brutal killings. I invite them to break all rules and culture those are unjust and irrational and execute their own will. MAKE OUR BEAUTIFUL EARTH FREE FROM TERROR AND VIOLENCE.

There are certainly numerous details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to deliver up. I provide the ideas above as basic inspiration however clearly there are questions like the one you deliver up where an important thing will likely be working in sincere good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, however I am positive that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the influence of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
