Dr. Binayak Sen & Others : Our Solidarity

Dr. Binayak Sen

On Christmas Eve (24 December, 2010), Dr. Binayak Sen, a celebrated human rights activist and physician, along with two others, Pijush Guha and Narayan Sanyal were pronounced guilty of criminal conspiracy to commit sedition, under section 124(a) read with 24(b) of the Indian Penal Code. They were sentenced to life imprisonment. They were taken into a police van at 1 pm from the Raipur Sessions Court in Chhattisgarh.

IMMEDIATE REACTIONS:–

“The S.C. has held that the charge of sedition can be upheld if the prosecution can prove that the accused attempted to incite violence or public disorder. It is clear that this case doesn’t meet that standard.”

——Senior Supreme Court Advocate Prashant Bhushan

“This is a complete farce based on the testimony of one single witness. This sentence reveals the true face of the Indian state… they would jail Mahatma Gandhi if they could.”

——Mr. Pijush Guha, co-accused, a Kolkata businessman

The imprisonment is another blot in the hollow Indian “democratic” system…the court’s pronouncement is more a scandal than a verdict. What more should it take to shame a civilized society…I wonder! Are we still not going to step off the rails of “shining” India stupidly engrossed in salons, malls and stocks and take a look around to see what’s really happening in the rest of the nation?
We could also notice the contrast in the outcomes of Dr sen’s case and of Shankar Guha Niyogi, a labor leader of Chhattisgarh, and an associate of Dr Sen who was killed in 1991.His killers were let off as they were from a corporate mafia with powerful links.
The appalling verdict against Dr Sen is nothing but an “award” for his campaign against fake encounters, custodial deaths, hunger deaths, malnutrition and dysentery.
As impeccably pointed out by Anand Patwardhan, the renowned documentary maker…if standing up non-violently for the most deprived people leads the government to throw him in jail, more people with start waging wars.
With such verdicts we are very close to surrender our basic rights and freedom…so friends, release your mind…speak out!

Scamsters, crminals, rapists roam free! Honest goes to jail!
Helper of the poor gets life sentence!

Is this why we pay taxes? Is this democracy? Is this justice???

That shows the real character of the Indian State. In the the very name of democracy, it’s a anti-people and pro-imperialist autocracy that’s ruling the country, exploiting the people and looting poor. This is our system, “freedom” for Scam-stars like Raja and Kalmadi, “prison” for Vinayak Sen.

If this is how government is going to treat a doctor who worked honestly in rural areas where probably no doctor would even want to go, then I am afraid if anyone else will ever go and work there even if government provides “perks” and “incentives” under the so called “rural health mission”! Why will one work there and later tagged as a maoist or a terrorist for working honestly?

Moreover, this kind of judgement again proves to be an insult to our constitution framers who “granted” so many freedoms to us as Indian citizens. Now, we can’t read a book of our choice. If a book on Karl Marx or Maoism is found at our home, we will be arrested soon.

Can we read about Wikileaks cables, Niira Radia, A. Raja, Kalmadi, Anderson, Kasab, Babri Masjid demolition, Godhra genocide and similar things?

India is a democratic country with ideology of solidarity and secularism. Our constitution permits freedom of speech. If Dr.Sen can be punished, we have to punish most politicians except few.If criminals of all sorts can free why such an activist working for the underprivilaged is to be punished. The human right activist should fight for his freedom. SC should see the goodness in him

Indian Govt. has declared a WAR against his own people. So, any person who is working for poor, hungry people will be recognized as a TERRORIST(!). This is what u can expect from a FASCIST Govt.

  23. Dr.Abraham Chettissery 28 January 2011 at 12:02 PM #

Dr.Sen’s imprisonment is a great threat to Indian Democracy. It cannot be justified.

  24. For some reason, people find it tough to admit that they carry around, in their mouths, these
disgusting stones. His slick lawyer Josh Stafford was faced with the problem of finding Rachel
Lane. Can you get tonsil stones if your tonsils have been extracted.
