On 6th March, 2012, we witnessed the launch of perhaps the most prevalent social changing television series—Satyamev Jayate. (Truth only triumphs). Interestingly, the series title is also the official motto of our nation. The show, hosted by Amir Khan the immensely popular Bollywood actor, is primarily in Hindi but dubbed in other languages such as Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. It is broadcasted simultaneously on various channels of Star TV group and DD national every Sunday at 11 a.m.
The whole idea of the show is to bring to light social issues deeply rooted into our society but preferred to be kept in the closet. So far, malevolent topics like child sex abuse, female feticide had been discussed. The distinctive part of the show is that the host uses his star power to assemble support and bring out these issues from under the rugs. In the two episodes aired so far, we have seen common herds sharing their real life appalling experiences with Aamir, who outstandingly disentangles their emotional shock and exposes the truth that our society preferred to act ignorant of.
The first episode based on female feticide showed tormented mothers from different walks of life sharing their experiences when they were carrying a female child and how they were conned to abort their babies. The show dismantles the snooty disillusionment that female feticide is primarily the practice of the so called “illiterates” in the rural belts. The episode played host to Meena Sharma and Shripal Shaktawat, the two brave journalists from Rajasthan, who did quite a lot of stings in a number of clinics and hospitals across India that practiced the heinous crime of murdering a female child in the mother’s womb. The show has helped in creating a public forum and the host has promised to write to the Chief Minister of Rajasthan to set up Fast track courts to settle the looming cases against the doctors caught committing such odious acts in the state
The second episode titled “Break the silence” was aired on 13th May 2012. It was based on child sex abuse. Some victims shared their trauma and how their childhood was snatched away from them because of callousness of their adults. The best part of the show was the workshop for little children conducted by Amir Khan himself to make them aware of and how to act quickly if they smell such danger.
This is first time in the history of Indian television that someone has taken such a brave step to boldly bring out the bitter truth of our society in public. This show is very touching and at the same time very inspiring too! It has given a platform to the people for speaking out and ensures them that they will be heard. It gives courage to fight against heinous social crimes being committed on someone or the other everyday.
We are extremely thankful to Amir khan and his team and congratulate them for this honest effort towards solving these social issues about which either people remain silent or are forcefully made silent. We hope that they will continue with their good work and come up with more burning issues and provide a powerful forum for commoners to battle out against all odds for a cleaner and healthier society.
